EDITORIAL PRINCIPLES & COMMUNITY VALUES
Chapter & Chronicle is guided by a belief that good writing can be generous, imaginative, searching, and exacting without becoming inaccessible. The magazine exists to create a thoughtful space for readers and writers: a place where stories are taken seriously, ideas are allowed room to develop, and different voices can sit alongside one another with dignity.
Our editorial approach begins with care. Every piece selected for publication is reviewed with attention to its purpose, voice, structure, and emotional or intellectual integrity. We value writing that has been shaped, not merely produced. This does not mean that every piece must be polished in the same way or sound as though it belongs to one house style. It means that each piece should feel intentional, alive to language, and respectful of the reader’s time.
We believe in editorial independence, but not detachment. Chapter & Chronicle is interested in the world: its beauty, contradictions, injustices, absurdities, consolations, and mysteries. The magazine may publish work that is reflective, fantastical, critical, personal, tender, humorous, unsettling, or strange. What matters is not whether a piece fits a narrow category, but whether it has substance, craft, and a reason for being there.
We welcome imagination in its many forms. A fantasy story may reveal something true through invention. A personal essay may become a doorway into a wider cultural question. A piece on wellbeing may carry more weight when it resists easy answers. Chapter & Chronicle does not separate seriousness from wonder, nor does it assume that beauty and intelligence must stand apart. The magazine is interested in writing that allows them to meet.
We are committed to creative respect. Writers deserve to be recognised for the work they create, and readers deserve work that has not been copied, misrepresented, carelessly assembled, or stripped of its origin. Originality matters here not as a posture, but as a matter of trust. Plagiarism, false attribution, unauthorised use, and the misuse of another person’s creative work are incompatible with the values of the publication.
We also believe that a literary space should be welcoming without becoming careless. Readers are invited to engage, question, respond, disagree, and interpret. Conversation is part of the life of a publication. Yet disagreement is most valuable when it remains human. Cruelty, harassment, intimidation, personal abuse, or malicious conduct have no place within the community we hope to build.
The magazine is intended for a wide readership. You do not need a literature degree to belong here. You do not need to know the correct terminology, have the right references, or arrive with any particular credentials. Curiosity is enough. A love of stories is enough. A willingness to read with attention is enough.
For contributors, Chapter & Chronicle aims to offer an editorial experience that is encouraging, rigorous, and respectful. We may suggest revisions, ask questions, refine structure, or work with a writer to strengthen a piece, but the aim is always to serve the work rather than overwrite the person behind it. The writer’s voice matters. Editorial guidance should help that voice become clearer, not smaller.
At its best, a magazine becomes more than a collection of pages. It becomes a meeting place: between writer and reader, imagination and experience, private thought and public expression. Chapter & Chronicle is built in that spirit. It is for those who read to be transported, challenged, steadied, surprised, or reminded that other inner worlds exist alongside their own.
We do not ask every reader to love every piece. We do hope that each person who arrives here finds something that lingers.
